Nota Bene: March 3, 2024

by Mar 1, 2024Nota Bene

Our readings call us to roll up our sleeves and persevere through the remainder of Lent by committing to a more faithful life with Christ. This season of Lent is only halfway done- there is still time to work through our shortcomings & purify our hearts for Easter morning. But let us not waste another moment. Let us name our shortcomings, seek God’s mercy & invite Him to transform our hearts.

The Scrutinies are three special rites within the Rite/Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) process that help prepare the Catechumen now referred to as the Elect, for baptism in the Catholic Church. This year we are blessed to have three Catechumens preparing for baptism at the Easter Vigil. The Scrutinies take place near the end of the Catechumens formation during the period known as Purification and Enlightenment, on the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sunday of Lent. Therefore, Fr. Blake will be at the Basilica during Lent, as we journey with our Catechumens. The season of Lent involves a more intense period of examination and preparation for the Elect, and hopefully for those of us already living the Catholic faith. Though they are meant for the OCIA Elect, the Scrutinies can help all Catholics seeking to live a life of continuous conversion. The Scrutinies will take place at the 10:30am Mass at the Basilica. Please pray for Sam, Yuan, and Milianna, who are preparing to be received fully into the Catholic Church this Easter.

We live in a time of great change and instability, from the global scale of nations and societies down to the most personal level of lives – our parishes, communities, families. Finding and maintaining inner peace in uncertain times requires us to go deeper in faith with the Lord whose providence holds the whole world in His love. Come join Fr Denis Lemieux this Lent to journey with Christ into the deep waters of faith and hope He calls us to persevere in the Church’s mission of compassionate love and service in our troubled world.
Fr Denis Lemieux is a native son of St Finnan’s Basilica, growing up in Alexandria and having deep family roots in the area.
