Nota Bene: February 11, 2024

Today’s readings prepare us for the penitential season of Lent. Lent is a time to offer acts of reparation through Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving so that we might be purified in all areas of our life and walk with the Gracious Healer, Who sacrificed His life for our sake. This holy and blessed season of Lent is an opportunity to be healed and cleansed on our journey as disciples of Christ. Let us consider what we can do to offer acts of reparation so that we might be purified and one day partake in the resurrection of Christ.

For our parish, in thanksgiving for St. Finnan’s intercession, whose Feast Day we celebrate February 9th, that we may cultivate welcome, extend hospitality, and encourage the participation of people of all cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds, let us pray to the Lord.

PASTOR’S MONTHLY PRAYER INTENTION:  During this month of February, the month in which the Church celebrates the World Day of the Sick, that the terminally ill “will always receive the necessary medical and human care and assistance.”, and for families caring for loved ones through illness, loneliness, and old age, may relationships be nurtured, and that leaning on others to share their burden is made more possible, let us pray to the Lord.

This year Ash Wednesday falls on Feb. 14th, the date annually celebrated as Valentine’s Day. Some may be wondering if a dispensation from the standard laws of fast and abstinence will be granted. “Out of respect for the importance of Ash Wednesday in the lives of so many — including our non-Catholic brothers and sisters, and the way this custom underlines the importance of the Lenten season at its outset, a dispensation will not be given.” Mass: 8am, 10am (with St. Finnan’s Catholic School), and 7pm all at the Basilica. Also, please join us for our Shrove Tuesday parish gathering!
Please note the following from the Office of Sacred Liturgy: “Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. A blessed Lenten season to all.”

A reminder that effective next Sunday, February 18th, we will modify our Sunday Mass schedule for
St. Finnan’s Parish: St. Anthony’s church: Sunday at 10:30am, St. Finnan’s Basilica: Sunday at 8am and 10:30am, St. James church: Sunday at 9am.
