Lift Up Your Hearts

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,
for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you:
fruit of the earth and work of human hands,
it will become for us the bread of life.

The words at Mass which The priest Says as He lifts Up the bread

“The actions and gestures of the Mass are deeply meaningful, and the more we understand them, the more we will connect with what God is doing through the Mass.” As we continue our year of discernment it is exciting to see St. Finnan’s Parish continue to grow. I have mentioned before how it is the Eucharist that will renew our parish. I’m excited to share with you a new project that will help more parishioners step into the Church, and in this case, our Basilica.

At Mass, when the priest prepares to consecrate the bread and wine, he says, “Lift up your hearts!” This seems to me the prayer that will help us understand our upcoming major capital accessibility project.

“Lift up your hearts!”

The Parish Finance Council has engaged A49 Architects and EVB Engineering to prepare plans and obtain construction costs for enhanced accessibility, including a lift, for our St. Finnan’s Basilica. Our current ramp through the back of the church does not comply with municipal regulations and is very difficult to use in the winter months.

Initial studies identify the replacement of our Bishop Street entrance as the best alternative given that:

  • the current entrance structure is not an original part of the Basilica. The cement cladding is deteriorating and in serious need of repair.
  • it is the closest entrance to the parking lot
  • this location would not have any structural implications for the Basilica structure
  • this location offers an option to request a crosswalk from the Township and
  • a ramp can be added without detracting from the appearance of the main entrance to the Basilica

The Parish Finance Council hopes to be in a position shortly after Labour Day to hold an information session in order to inform and obtain comments from our parishioners on the plans, cost of the project and potential fundraising objectives.

Please see below some of the images for our upcoming presentation in September. Also please feel free to email me with any questions. Let us continue praying for each other. Peace.
